Spanning the Idaho/Montana border, the Scotchmans are one of the last, and largest, wild areas in our region. We conduct education, outreach and stewardship activities to preserve the rugged, scenic and biologically diverse 88,000 acre Scotchman Peaks Roadless Area. We believe the Scotchman Peaks deserve congressional designation as Wilderness for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Endorsements

One of the measures of broad public support are endorsements.  Through  newspaper editorials, resolutions of support and letters of endorsement – councils, commissions, publications, organizations and officials show their own support as well as support from the groups they represent.  These prominent individuals and organizations give voice to groups of people.
Because they reflect the will [...]

The Thanksgiving Day weekend is over, family and guests have gone home and we are all tired of turkey and turkey leftovers!  Black Friday was a push and shove fest for those who battled the lines at the big box stores in Coeur D’Alene for deep discounts.  For others Friday was a wonderland of white [...]

What Happens In Montana

Recently we talked about an emerging process in North Idaho which may result in legislation which would include Wilderness on the Idaho Panhandle and would likely include the Idaho portion of the Scotchmans.  One of our concerns is that such legislation would leave the Montana portion of the Scotchmans side hanging, sort of like a [...]

A New Day is Dawning for North Idaho

The recently passed legislation designating the Owyhees as Wilderness and the Jobs and Forest Act, currently introduced by Senator Jon Tester which would designate over 600,000 acres of wilderness in Montana, both came about as a result of community discussions and collaboration among stakeholders. While not the only pathway forward, collaboration has been one way [...]

The Public is the Process

Congressional Members are elected representatives.  Like all politicians they want, in fact they need, to act in ways in which they believe their constituents want them to act.  Unless they are out of touch and want to have only one term, their views and their votes will reflect the will of the people.
In the process [...]

Wilderness Around the Region

If the Scotchman Peaks proposal is impacted by what’s happening national  for wilderness then certainly the most significant of  those events are the events which are taking place in our immediate region.
The 2009 Lands Omnibus Bill included Wilderness designation for the Owyhees, Idaho’s first new wilderness are in over two decades! Senator Crapo has already [...]

Wilderness Around the Country

Designating Wilderness requires congressional legislation.  But congress doesn’t act in a vacuum. Politics, it has been said, is the “art of the possible.” What is possible depends on what has already happened before; and it depends on what else is going on now. There is a constant give and take in the dance that [...]

Bob Marshall Remembered

As wilderness lovers we appreciate solitude, but we also must recognize that we do nothing in isolation. Our work today, in any field, is built upon a foundation of the work done by others before us.  Land management and Wilderness advocacy are no exceptions.
“Just a few more years of hesitation and the only trace of [...]

Snow Falling, Hike Leaders Calling

Clouds outside my window these last several days suggest snow has been  falling softly on the Scotchmans.  The reality is probably that the wind is whipping the snow into a blinding white-out fury on the peaks! Meanwhile the valley bottoms are likely receiving rain.  But you get the idea – winter is on the way.  [...]

Another Fine Fall Day!

I can’t believe the glorious weather that November brought for us Tuesday – it was another fine fall day!  Blue skies outside all day. And as I looked across the lake at the West Cabinet Mountains in the distance I just couldn’t believe that I was stuck inside – unable to get in a nice [...]
