Spanning the Idaho/Montana border, the Scotchmans are one of the last, and largest, wild areas in our region. We conduct education, outreach and stewardship activities to preserve the rugged, scenic and biologically diverse 88,000 acre Scotchman Peaks Roadless Area. We believe the Scotchman Peaks deserve congressional designation as Wilderness for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future generations.

Winter Hikes — Looking for a few good leaders

Scotchmans Snow Shoe Hike

Scotchmans Snow Shoe Hike

Hi, fellow Friends and hike leaders,

In the interest of making it easy to volunteer to lead a Scotchman Peaks hike, we have a new page at ScotchmanPeaks.org, where you can download our form by which to lead a hike:

www.scotchmanpeaks.org/hiking/leading-hikes/

Go there now! :-)

Seriously, if you have a favorite winter walk into the Western Cabinet, aka the Scotchman Peaks, whether it’s a stroll or what the late Tim Parnow used to call a “back-fat-burner,” we would love it if you’d share it with the rest of the Friends.

We’ve got four of our goal of ten hikes in the bag. Phil Hough led off with a hike into Lightning Creek in early January, and Jim Mellen has offered to lead two, one into Morris Creek in February and another to Goat Peak in late March. Their enthusiasm inspired me to lead an afternoon/evening hike into Blue Creek on the full moon, February 27.

We still need 6 hikes to fill out our goal of ten winter hikes, and the deadline for inclusion in our January/February newsletter is Saturday, December 12. If you have one that meets the MWA criteria, November 18th is the deadline for sending hikes that are both FSPW and MWA Winter Walks.

Thanks for your attention. I hope to hear from you soon. Don’t hesitate to contact me (sandy@scotchmanpeaks.org) if you have a question or suggestion.

Keep walking!

Sandy C
