Roughly 60 miles south of Canada, the 88,000 acre Scotchman Peaks roadless area spans the Idaho-Montana border. Since the 1970s, when the U.S. Forest Service carried out extensive evaluations of lands suitable for wilderness, this rugged, scenic and biologically diverse portion of the Cabinet Mountains has been managed for its wilderness potential. The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness believe now is the time to preserve the Scotchmans, one of the last, and largest, wild areas in our region.

Radical Reels coming to Sandpoint’s Panida Theater

Once again, Banff Mountain Centre sends a series of films south, these displayed under the moniker Radical Reels. And once again, Mountain Fever Productions brings these films to the Panida in Sandpoint. Stop by and say “hi” to our table volunteers in the Panida lobby, Tuesday, March 16. Doors open at 6:30 and the films begin at 7:00.

“Held annually each Fall from the end of October into early November, the Banff Mountain Film Festival has included the Radical Reels night, which is a special screening of the wildest high-adrenaline films entered in the Banff Mountain Film Festival. So many action films were being submitted to the film festival that they could not fit into the regular screenings, resulting in the creation of the hugely successful Radical Reels evening presentation.

“Now you don’t have to journey to Banff each fall to see these exciting films! Since 2004, the Radical Reels Tour has also been out on the road. The established Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour has been thrilling audiences since 1981.”

Friends of Scotchman Peaks is grateful to Mountain Fever producer Michael Boge for the opportunity to participate in this great Sandpoint event.

New YouTube video from Walkin’ Jim concert in Thompson Falls

Walkin’ Jim Stoltz knows how to keep a room full of children interested. (http://bit.ly/bZ8ilL) Using imaginatively connected photographs (mostly taken by himself) and original songs, Stoltz shares his love of wild places and the creatures and plants that inhabit them with kids all over the United States. His entertaining and educational show mesmerized 175 kids (and their teachers) at Thompson Falls Elementary School in Thompson Falls, Montana, on Friday, March 5. By using humor, pictures and inviting the kids to sing along with him, Jim passed on his message to the entire school and then visited classrooms for question and answer periods with each age group at the school.

Jim also visited the elementary school in Trout Creek, Montana, the day before and put on a free concert — sponsored by Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness — for the Thompson Falls community on Friday night.

Libby Film Fest great success

125 folks in a room designed to hold about 100 might seem crowded, but no one seemed to mind too much as a standing-room-only crowd at Libby’s Little Theatre enjoyed three films from International Wildlife Film Festival (www.wildlifefilms.org)

This free show, sponsored by FSPW, netted a number of new Friends, as well as a good dose of donations and t-shirt, hat and bandanna sales. Thanks to Charlie Clough, Lincoln County Coordinator, for his good work in this.

Low snow doesn’t stop the winter hikes

Freinds of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness 2010 Winter Hike Series continues to draw hiking enthusiasts in spite of the low snow pack. Volunteer hike leader Judy Hutchins took half-a-dozen folks on a 7.7-mile, low-altitude walk around Fatman Mountain at the south edge of the wilderness on Saturday, Feb. 6, and reported that a good time was had by all.

The lack of snowpack in the lower elevations has been a deterrent to snowshoes and skis, but folks headed for higher elevations have hauled their snowshoes and found some excellent ’shoeing up higher.

More to come! Look under the “Hikes” tab at the top of the page.

Scotchman Peaks Trail #65

A high wind event in early October has left many downed trees and large piles of debris across the Scotchman Peaks Trail #65. The size, location and instability of these obstacles pose a very difficult and potentially hazardous challenge to traverse and/or bushwhack around. While experienced hikers may accept the personal risk and succeed in getting past these obstacles, we do not recommend use of this trail in it’s current condition regardless of skill level or ability. We will be working with the forest service to identify solutions/projects to restore the trail to better conditions and let you know about any progress.
