Seeing wildlife in the backcountry is one of the exciting opportunities available in our area. A number of animals which are found in few other places call Northern Idaho and Northwestern Montana home. The Grizzly Bear is one of those; with a small population and a reclusive nature, a Grizzly sighting is a rare treat! Interested? READ ON.
The east end of Pillick Ridge on the Kootenai National Forest in Montana is one steep piece of ground — the “Pillick Face,” Forest Service Recreation Technician Joel Sather calls it — which is why portions of Forest Service Trail #1036 were in danger of falling off of it.
Thanks to a trail crew from the Cabinet Ranger District and volunteers from Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, though, the trail is now more securely attached.
You can read all about it here.
FSPW volunteers were on hand May 14 to help with the 17th annual STOKR (Scenic Tour of Kootenai River), a biking fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity in Libby, Montana. Read more here.

Local high school seniors urged apply for scholarships
The Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness annual scholarship essay competition for 2011 is now open. Last year, $1750 dollars were awarded to applicants for their essays on wilderness. The competition seeks entries from area seniors written on the theme, “What does wilderness have to teach the ‘civilized’ world?” A graduating senior from each high school in Thompson Falls, Plains, Noxon, Troy and Libby, Montana; as well as Clark Fork, Sandpoint and the Lake Pend Oreille Alternative High School in Idaho will recieve a $250 scholarship for the winning essay from each school, with an additional $250 rewarded for the best essay, overall.
“We’ve received some extraordinarily good essays in past years,” FSPW program coordinator Sandy Compton said, “and we will certainly get some more this year. The essay competition is a great way to let young people speak out for wilderness.”
This scholarship has no minimum GPA, nor does it require any commitment for higher education. This scholarship is paid directly to the individual upon successful graduation, and may be used as they see fit. Scholarship applications will be available from counselors at area high schools next week. Seniors may also ask for an application by calling Compton at 208-290-1281 or writing to sandy@scotchmanpeaks.org
Deadline for entry is April 15.
The FSPW winter photo contest is in full swing. In conjunction with the 2011 Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness Winter Hike series, the annual winter photo contest began on January 15 and runs through April 30, the last winter hike of this year. We are using a simplified format this year, with only two categories: Winter Critters (including people, pets and wilder creatures); and Winter Wonders (including scenic shots, macros and other creative compositions). A committee of Friends will choose first, second and third place winners in each category, for which appropriate FSPW swag will be awarded. Grand Prize is a professionally framed copy of your winning photo. For more information on submissions, go here.
As of February 25, there are still seven hikes left in our winter walk series, including one on Sunday, February 27 to Ross Creek Cedars led by Neil and Ann Wimberley. Coming up Saturday, March 5, is a ski and snowshoe jaunt up to Mount Vernon, led by the intrepid Sandii Mellen. (Bring your legs and lungs.) John Harbuck has moved his Goat Peak hike from April 9 to April 15, giving those who want to do Goat Peak twice this winter an extra week to recover from Jim Mellen’s trip on March 26. Get out there!
Sunday, February 20, FSPW will show two wilderness-based films at the Little Panida Theater in Sandpoint and present some of our volunteers with a special gift from the Friends. Read more about it here. Doors open at 6:00.
On the horizon for the Friends, we are sponsoring the International Wildlife Film Festival in Libby on Feb. 11. The showing will be at the Little Theater at 724 Louisiana in Libby at 7:00. Admission is free, but bring a nonperishable food item and we will deliver it to the Libby Food Pantry.
February 20 will be the official world premier of the short film, En Plein Air from Wildman Pictures. The film, which will be showed at the Little Panida Theater, was shot during the Extreme Plein Air hike in the Scotchman Peaks last summer and features artists Aaron Johnson, Jared Shear and David Herbold, gallery owner Kally Thurman of Hope and a cast of — well about a dozen, we think. View the interior of the Scotchmans through the lense of the camera crew and the eyes of the artists. Invitations will go out soon.
March 17, 18 and 19, FSWP brings wolverine expert Doug Chadwick, author of The Wolverine Way, to Trout Creek and Troy, Montana and Sandpoint to give a presentation on his favorite mustelid. The wolverine is currently being searched for in the Scotchmans as part of a research project undertaken jointly by Idaho Fish and Game; Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks; and the US Forest Service.
Check back in for times and venues for Chadwick.
