Giving Tuesday celebrates community

Giving Tuesday is a time to reflect on all the things that matter. Wilderness is one of those things, sure. But so are the local communities, businesses and people that make life special.

On Tuesday, Dec. 3, the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness and MickDuff’s Brewing Company teamed up to celebrate the local community this holiday season. It was all a part of Giving Tuesday, an international event held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to support organizations that make the world a better place.

The night proved an enjoyable one. FSPW supporters and passerby alike dropped donate, pick up a wilderness T-shirt or sweatshirt and chat with FSPW staff. Also up for grabs were hot slices of 2nd Avenue pizza.

Perhaps the highlight of the night, however, was the raffle. Participants could either purchase tickets or earn them by turning in receipts from recent purchases at local businesses. The idea was to kick start the holiday shopping season by spreading a little love to the locally owned businesses that make Sandpoint unique. Raffle winners had their pick of FSPW swag or a MickDuff’s growler and certificate.

All in all, Giving Tuesday was a reminder that local businesses and organizations rely on community support — especially during the holidays. This holiday season, be sure to shop or donate to the locals that you feel make the community a better place.

Patagonia is feeling especially generous this holiday season. Donate online to FSPW before the year ends and Patagonia will match it, dollar for dollar.
