Directions to Trailhead or Meeting Location:

We will plan to depart on our hike around 9AM Pacifictime on Sunday morning, June 21st from the Trestle Creek Road side on the north end of this trail. To access the departure trailhead turn onto Trestle Creek Road #275 off of Highway 200 about 12 miles east of Sandpoint, Idaho - between the Pack River delta and Hope, Idaho. Travel approximately 13 miles up Trestle Creek Road to the trailhead. This is located a mile or so past the junction with Lunch Peak Lookout Road #1091.

Hike Description:

Join us on a potential thriller for 24 miles along the Bee Top-Round Top Trail 120 from Trestle Creek to Bee Top Mountain with an evening between near Round Top Mountain.

While not in the Scotchman Peaks Proposed Wilderness, this ridge line hike to the west across the Lightning Creek valley is sure to please on many levels including the potential for great views directly across into the Scotchmans to the east and down on Lake Pend O’Reille to the south and west.

Dennis Nicholls, author of Trails of the Wild Cabinets begins his description of this hike “could it be argued that this is one of the most scenic trails in the world?”. Suffice it to say, the eye candy could be second to none if the weather is nice. Refer to page 99 in this guidebook for further descriptions.

Being a ridgeline hike, water may be scarce and snowfields may still come into play. Mosquitoes could be feasting as well. Prepare accordingly. The hike leader plans to drop a cache of extra water in the vicinity of
the overnight camp near Round Top prior to this weekend. Bring sufficient water and light, sturdy gear and boots – including foul weather protection. Any questions please ask as I have extra gear or can arrange to get some.

While not imperative, folks with either prior backpacking experience or at least a decent level of physical fitness and day hiking experience should consider joining on this one. Be advised that the departure trail on day 2, Bee Top # 63, is very steep and rugged and will not be kind on those with bad knees or ankles.

Our group will arrange to drop a vehicle on the Bee Top departure end for a shuttle back at the end of the hike.

I plan to car camp somewhere along Trestle Creek Road or even up at the trailhead on Saturday evening for anyone interested in arriving the evening before. I likely won’t arrive until early evening after work. We can discuss details once our group is signed up. Sunday morning arrivals please plan to meet at the Trestle Creek Road turnoff at Highway 200 at 8AM Pacific. I will arrange for someone to facilitate the shuttle rig on the south end of the traverse beforehand once folks are signed up.

We can discuss carpooling for those of you that may be coming from town once we have our group setup.
