A steeply ascending power line service track leads to the trail about 150' off the highway on the north side (courtesy D. Nicholls, Trails of the Wild Cabinets). Carpooling option: Meet at Yokes parking lot in Ponderay at 8:30 AM Pacific time.

Hike Description:

Join us for a snowshoe up the Blacktail Creek 997 Trail to discover the wonders that winter can bring in the Clark Fork River Corridor located near the Southeast portion of the proposed Scotchman Peaks Wilderness. Elevation gain/loss 1600′ and 4 miles round-trip at a minimum. Depending on group makeup and ambition its possible to attempt to climb another mile higher off-trail to attempt to tie in with the Pillick Ridge Trail. The potential exists for huge valley views if it’s a clear day as well as trekking on what may have been an old Glacial Lake Missoula terrace.

Be sure to bring snacks, a lunch, a warm drink, and/or plenty of water. A large daypack or straps to carry your snowshoes and poles may be necessary as its possible the trail will be clear at the bottom or even higher up on this South Facing slope.

***PLEASE NOTE: This is the first day of daylight savings time. Make sure to adjust your clocks forward the prior evening and plan accordingly.  We will start at 10 AM Pacific/ 11AM Mountain.
