Treasured Landscapes Volunteers!

Plans are getting underway for 2014 Treasured Landscapes restoration activities to start up, and we invite you to join us in our second season of project work! Here’s an overview of what we hope to accomplish this summer:

Noxious Weeds Mitigation
Calling all Weed Warriors!  Get hiking with your crewmates and let us know, how is your trail doing? Have the populations altered at all?  What if any circumstances surrounding your trail have changed?  We would love to hear about it!  We are keeping our fingers crossed for a weed spraying contract to begin this year… and it would be great to have another year of data to help with prioritizing our trails!!  Contact Kristen@Scotchmanpeaks.org anytime regarding protocols, gear check out, electronic or printed survey forms, maps, crew concerns, to get involved, or any other ways we can get you started with your research assistance!  Thanks so much for all you do!
Whitebark Pine Surveys
This year, the Botany Brigade will complete our 100-tree surveys and seed tree assessments with a final 3-day backpack deep into our wilderness proposal to assess the health and regeneration of our native whitebark pine populations.  We are looking for a small but dedicated crew to hike out and assist the USFS botany crew in systematic survey work to assess the headwater forest health of this Treasured Landscape! Spend your days high on the mountaintops and your nights under the stars while making a difference in wilderness preservation.  Contact Kristen@Scotchmanpeaks.org for more information!
Stream Restoration
Plans are underway this season to begin stream restoration activities on the Lightning Creek and Mud Creek for the  greater Lightning Creek drainage.  Lightning Creek project work entails willow collection and bundling in late July, a potential for optional overnight camping (burgers and campfire complimentary by FSPW), with planting work the following day (or two!).  This will be a fun, start-to-finish project that we hope watch grow throughout the coming seasons.  Then in October, restoration activities on Mud Creek will consist of a day-long tree planting project and an end-of-the-research-season BBQ to celebrate another year of accomplishments!  Register here or contact Kristen@Scotchmanpeaks.org for further details.
Trail Restoration
Trail restoration on the Morris Creek Trail is set to continue this year as well!  The goals are to bring in additional rock to stabilize trail sections washed out from the flooding event.  This project work will be held around National Public Lands Day in early autumn and will probably culminate with some sort of grilled-goods, so come on out swingin’!  Contact Sandy@Scotchmanpeaks.org for more details or to join in this event.

Be a part of this historic conservation endeavor as we restore this Treasured Landscape’s wilderness integrity! To learn more, go to our Citizen Scientist webpage and clink on the Treasured Landscapes tab, or go directly to our volunteer sign-up form and sign-up now!

Thank you for your interest and commitment to our wilderness land!
