Wolverine Way

Wolverine Way

This winter the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness has been assisting Idaho Fish and Game in setting up and checking several Wolverine monitoring locations in the Scotchmans. This is part of a larger study they are conducting in the West Cabinets to find out more about the Wolverine population and their habits. Even before they have compile the data, author and biologist Doug Chadwick will come to our communities to tell us what he has learned about Wolverines in his many years of study. A preview, if you will, of what we might expect to find out ourselves.

On March 17, 18 and 19: Doug Chadwick, author of The Wolverine Way, will do presentations on his favorite mustelid in Sandpoint, Trout Creek and Troy. Sandpoint, March 17, 6 p.m., Rude Girls Room, East Bonner County Library; Trout Creek, March 18, 7 pm, Trout Creek School; Troy, March 19, 5:00 p.m. The Hot Club, 3rd Street.

Doug will read from his recent book, talk Wolverine, answer any questions about this crazy carnivore and be on hand to sign copies of his book.

These events are free of charge, but we are asking guests to bring a non-perishable food item for the local foodbank in each community.

  1. Aloha from Schweitzer Mountain
Yesterday, March 25, 2011, while driving up Schweitzer Mountain Road at approximately 1:30 PM, just above the first switchback I saw a wolverine. It was visible to me twice as it traveled through the trees and brush. It was clearly a wolverine by its shape and coloring. I spoke with a friend who travels the mountain road daily and who is an amateur naturalist and he said the sighting is rare. Russ Carlson

  2. Aloha. Yesterday, March 25, 2011 at approximately 21:30 PM, I saw a wolverine. It was just above the first switchback on Schweitzer Mountain Road I clearly saw it twice as I slowly drove up the road as it traveled through the trees and brush. Its shape and coloring were distinctive. I spoke with a friend, an amateur naturalist, who travels the road daily and he said the sighting is remarkable on Schweiter Mountain. Russ Carlson

    1. Thanks for the sighting info – how exciting! We’ll pass it onto the folks at IDFG.
