Tuesday Trail Talk

Spar Peak guards its creek with rocky cliffs, providing a rough edge to the lush valley below. Some of us were lucky enough this last week to share the view with a great group of kids. The Montana Conservation Corps (MCC) crew working on the Little Spar Lake Trail only had one real disappointment; they didn’t see a moose. The polite, entertaining, and diligent teenagers spent the week working on the trail in some delightful wild country.

If you want a positive and uplifting view of today’s youth, these kids are some of the best. You still have a chance to camp, work, hike, or just hang out with an MCC crew any time the week of August 6th. Contact trails@scotchmanpeaks.org for more information.

We have a busy month ahead at FSPW with plenty of chances to get involved. Whether it is brawn or brains that are your specialty, they are both needed to accomplish our stewardship and outreach opportunities.

We’ve made a lot of progress on the Star Peak Trail rebuild. We’ll continue on Friday, August 3rd and Friday, August 17th. We have had fabulous volunteers for this project so far; a thank you from FSPW only scratches the surface of our appreciation. The plan on both Fridays is for the Sandpoint folks to meet and carpool from the Super Save Drug parking lot at 7 a.m. Pacific time and be at the Star Peak trailhead (Milepost 6.3 on Highway 200, also known as the Fatman Road) at 9 a.m. Mountain time. Contact trails@scotchmanpeaks.org to join the fun.

The Bonner County Fair and Fair food are beckoning. Our booth needs a few more folks who would like to meet, greet, and get to know some new Friends. Fair dates are August 21st to 25th. Hours of the Fair are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you have an hour or two (or three or four) to contribute, call 208-597-5206 or email trails@scotchmanpeaks.org

Whew!

See you on the trail!
