We’re Hiring – Spend a Summer in the Scotchmans

Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness (FSPW) and the Kootenai National Forest (KNF) in Montana are hiring a Backcountry Ranger/Community Outreach Coordinator for the 2024 summer season. This is a paid internship position!

WHAT: The Backcountry Ranger’s primary duties include working on trails, community outreach, developing trail and leadership skills, and patrolling the Scotchman Peaks Recommended Wilderness Area to educate visitors and protect the area’s wild character. They will receive intensive training and education in natural resource management from an interdisciplinary, field-based perspective.

WHO: The ideal applicant is an experienced leader who is passionate about stewardship of wildlands, interested in a career in natural resource management, and comfortable in public situations.

WHEN: 10-12 weeks program from June – August 2024

WHERE: Trout Creek Ranger Station in Trout Creek, MT. Government housing at no cost is available.

PAY: This is a paid internship, at the rate of $12/hr

Phil Hough is the Executive Director of the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness.

He has hiked the "triple crown": the Appalachian Trail, Continental Divide Trail and the Pacific Crest trail (twice). He has also paddled the length of the Yukon river. Phil's love of wilderness guides him as he works to save the incrediblly wild Scotchman Peaks, one of the last and largest roadless places in northern Idaho and western Montana.
