After a successful first attempt in fall of 2008, Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness held two Plein Air events in 2009 — a more traditional one in late September, and another that might have been the first of its kind: the 2009 Heart of the Scotchmans Extreme Plein Air. Aaron Johnson and Jared Shear, two of the 2008 painters, and poet-painter  Victor Vosen accompanied FSPW program coordinator Sandy Compton into the backcountry for three days of “painting and panting,” a combination of time for art and stellar backpacking. The results were spectacular.

Add to that the plein air results from September, and FSPW has a great collection of wild art. Due to the enormous interest in both the Plein Air events sponsored by the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness, and the art that was the result of these events, we’ve added this page to showcase both the art and artists.

Also, for those wilderness enthusiasts who are looking for a very special Holiday Gift, we wanted to make these unique paintings available for viewing and purchase via this website with part of the proceeds going to FSPW.

Watch for our next plein air results soon. The 2010 Extreme Plein Air is slated for July 9 through 13, and the more traditional event is on for the last weekend of September
