NW Montana Outreach Coordinator  

Work in and around the mountains as a wilderness advocate!

  • Reports to:  Executive Director
  • Salary:  $35,000 – $40,000 depending on experience
  • Classification:  Full or part-time position
  • Location: Remote based in Lincoln or Sanders County, MT*
    •   *Preference for SW Lincoln County or W Sanders County
  • Start Date: Early April, 2022   

Job Scope 

The Northwest Montana Outreach Coordinator will provide leadership, coordination and oversight of the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness (FSPW) outreach and community building efforts in Montana with a focus on Lincoln and Sanders Counties.  We’re looking for an individual with a connection to these landscapes and a passion for conservation. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to manage logistics, volunteers, and materials with an eye to detail. We are looking for someone with exceptional written and oral communication skills. This person must enjoy building connections with a wide range of people. 

Outreach, Education, and Community Engagement ~80% 

  • Manage outreach events in Lincoln and Sanders counties; give presentations as needed 
  • Work closely with partners to plan and implement the annual Kootenai Harvest Festival 
  • Attend and participate in partner meetings and events 
  • Represent FSPW at a variety of community and collaborative meetings 
  • Coordinate Winter Tracks events in Lincoln and Sanders counties 
  • Coordinate volunteer-led group summer and winter hikes and outdoor education field trips 
  • Support FSPW’s annual high school scholarship program 
    Support other youth outdoor education programs 
    Support for our trail stewardship program in Montana 

Communications ~15% 

  • Develop press releases and listserv messages for Lincoln and Sanders Counties 
  • Develop content and assist in management of social media pages 
  • Source, record, and produce content for Your Wild Place podcast  
  • Develop content and assist in management of website using WordPress 
  • Distribute collateral materials in local area 

Fundraising and Development ~5% 

  • Support Montana-focused grant applications, reporting, and tracking 

Primary Qualifications 

  • Self-motivated and outgoing; willing to initiate contact with community members, media members, businesses, and partner organizations 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and programs simultaneously 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members 
  • Attention to detail and strong organization skills 
  • Aptitude for working well with others, building relationships within and external to FSPW 
  • Ability to meet deadlines and effectively manage several tasks at once 
  • Strong written, oral communication and presentation skills 
  • Adept at learning new technology quickly 
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 and G-Suite 
  • Connections to the communities of Troy, Libby, Thompson Falls, Trout Creek, or Heron 
  • Passion for Wilderness and/or conservation of public lands 

Secondary Qualifications 

  • Experience coordinating event logistics 
    Experience collaborating with colleagues and other stakeholder groups 
  • Understanding of effective communication strategies for both print and digital environments 
  • Experience with website management via WordPress, cloud-based file storage, internal communication tools such as Slack, and work-flow management tools such as Asana 
  • Familiarity with constituent relationship management (CRM) software 
  • Previous non-profit experience preferred 
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred

  1. I have lived in n.idaho for 33 years and I love it I’m 77 years old and love the back country I would like any information on a trail ride to Scotsman peak this year. I have been to moose lake a couple times but never to scotchsman any information would be helpful. Thanks

    1. Hi Susan! There aren’t any groups we know of that do trail rides in the Scotchmans. There are a few folks in the area that ride though. We can keep a look out for you!
